چکیده

Abstract Aridity regulates the terrestrial ecosystem productivity in water-limited regions. The aridity index (AI) is often defined as ratio of annual precipitation to potential evapotranspiration. However, how drying and wetting influence vegetation response its characteristic along gradient remains unclear. Here, we examined trends AI normalized difference (NDVI) drylands East Asia from 1982 2015, which denoted response, respectively. results show that variability land area 1982–2015 was lower whole dryland than subtypes including hyper-arid, arid, semi-arid, dry sub-humid Drying were observed each interval a spatial gradient. Wetting are prevalent owing their magnitude twice those trends. Spatial variation shaped pattern trends; drier regions had smaller narrower ranges NDVI relative wetter A shift occurred at 0.4 AI. Distinct patterns change across threshold, transition region identified studied drylands. suggest changes might be masked by entire then leading failure recognizing transformation subtypes. This implies carbon storage prediction should consider avoid uncertainties due divergent different levels.

A wetting and drying scheme for POM

In shallow-water models, wetting and drying (WAD) are determined by the total water depth D 1⁄4 0 for ‘dry’ and >0 for ‘wet’. Checks are applied to decide the fate of each cell during model integration. It is shown that with bottom friction values commonly used in coastal models, the shallow-water system may be cast into a Burger’s type equation for D. For flows dominated by D (i.e. jrDj jrH j,...

A wetting and drying scheme for ROMS

The processes of wetting and drying have many important physical and biological impacts on shallow water systems. Inundation and dewatering effects on coastal mud flats and beaches occur on various time scales ranging from storm surge, periodic rise and fall of the tide, to infragravity wave motions. To correctly simulate these physical processes with a numerical model requires the capability o...

Terrestrial Aridity and Its Response to Greenhouse Warming across CMIP5 Climate Models

The aridity of a terrestrial climate is often quantified using the dimensionless ratio P/PET of annual precipitation (P) to annual potential evapotranspiration (PET). In this study, the climatological patterns and greenhouse warming responses of terrestrial P, Penman–Monteith PET, and P/PET are compared among 16 modern global climate models. The large-scale climatological values and implied bio...

Water Use Efficiency and Physiological Response of Rice Cultivars under Alternate Wetting and Drying Conditions

One of the technology options that can help farmers cope with water scarcity at the field level is alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Limited information is available on the varietal responses to nitrogen, AWD, and their interactions. Field experiments were conducted at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) farm in 2009 dry season (DS), 2009 wet season (WS), and 2010 DS to determine...

Individual contributions of climate and vegetation change to soil moisture trends across multiple spatial scales

Climate and vegetation change are two dominating factors for soil moisture trend. However, their individual contributions remain unknown due to their complex interaction. Here, I separated their contributions through a trajectory-based method across the global, regional and local scales. Our results demonstrated that climate change accounted for 98.78% and 114.64% of the global drying and wetti...
